چکیده
Modern applications of refractory ceramic thin films, predominantly as wear-protective coatings on cutting tools and on components utilized in automotive engines, require a combination of excellent mechanical properties, thermal stability and oxidation resistance. Conventional design approaches for transition metal nitride coatings with improved thermal and chemical stability are based on alloying with Al. It is well known that the solubility of Al in NaCl-structure transition metal nitrides is limited. Hence, the great challenge is to increase Al concentration substantially while avoiding precipitation of thermodynamically-favored wurtzite-AlN phase which is detrimental to mechanical properties. Here, we use VAlN as a model system to illustrate a new concept for the synthesis of a metastable single-phase NaCl-structure thin films with Al content far beyond solubility limits obtained with conventional plasma processes. This supersaturation is achieved by separating the film-forming species in time and energy domains through synchronization of the 70-μs-long pulsed substrate bias with intense periodic fluxes of energetic Al+ metal ions during reactive hybrid high power impulse magnetron sputtering of Al target and direct current magnetron sputtering of V target in Ar/N2 gas mixture. Hereby, Al is subplanted

Extended metastable Al solubility in cubic VAlN by metal-ion bombardment during pulsed magnetron sputtering: film stress vs subplantation
Dynamic ion-recoil mixing of near-film-surface atomic layers is commonly used to increase the metastable solubility limit xmax in otherwise immiscible thin film systems during physical vapor deposition. Recently, Al subplantation achieved by irradiating film growth surface with Al+ metalion flux was shown to result in an unprecedented xmax for VAlN, far above values obtained with gas ion irradi...

In this research, ZnO thin films with Al impurity as dopant were coated onto cleaned glass substrates by the spray pyrolysis technique. Crystal structure of the thin films was studied via XRD, and UV-vis spectroscopy was carried out to investigate their optical properties. Finally, in order to study the effect of Al impurity in ZnO thin films, the band structures of both pure and doped systems ...

متن کاملOptical properties of wurtzite and rock-salt ZnO under pressure
This paper reports on the pressure dependence of the optical absorption edge of ZnO in the wurtzite and rock-salt phase, up to 14 GPa. Both vapor-phase monocrystals and pulsed-laser-deposition thin films have been investigated. In both types of samples the wurtzite to rocksalt transition is observed at 9.7G0.2 GPa. The absorption tail of the fundamental gap, as measured in monocrystals, exhibit...
متن کاملPhase Stability, Nitrogen Vacancies, Growth Mode, and Surface Structure of ScN(001) under Sc-rich Conditions
Rock-salt structure scandium nitride films have been grown on magnesium oxide (001) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy using a rf plasma source for nitrogen. The case of Sc-rich growth conditions, which occurs when the scandium flux JSc exceeds the nitrogen flux JN , is discussed. Despite the excess Sc during growth, reflection high energy electron diffraction and x-ray diffraction shows that...
